INTRODUCTION TO THE NEVADA ALLIANCE
The Nevada Alliance for Defense, Energy and Business was incorporated in
1992 as a not-for-profit trade group with five corporate members. It has since risen
to become an acknowledged authority for technology development in Nevada with more than
thirty members.
A fundamental key to business development is access. Access to government,
to business organizations, to university interests and, most importantly,
access to the marketplace: in this case, access to the core technology firms
operating in the southern Nevada
marketplace. Access this broad can be both costly and time-consuming.
Membership in the Alliance
conveys this accessibility without significant cost.
The Alliance,
with its three person staff of part-time and full-time people, maintains a
close working relationship with the U.S. Department of Energy, both at DOE
Headquarters and at the Nevada Operations Office. This relationship involves
the Nevada Alliance in the nation’s nuclear weapons programs and in existing
and emerging Nevada Test Site initiatives such as the proposed space launch
facility and the national center for combating terrorism.
From a defense perspective the Alliance
tracks activities at Nellis AFB and the Nellis Range, and supports regional U.S. military
facilities and capabilities through our seat on the Southwest Defense Alliance
board of directors.
Through direct links with the University and Community College System of
Nevada the Alliance participates in education
and research initiatives important to the Nevada
business community and the federal agencies working in Nevada.
The Alliance staff directly supports southern
Nevada
business and industry by way of membership and participation in the Nevada
Development Authority and the principal Chambers of Commerce. The Alliance is also involved in major business initiatives
underway in Nevada, including the formation of
an active venture capital network and development of the 6400-acre Ivanpah Valley
Airport and industrial park
twenty-five miles south of Las Vegas.
The Alliance staff sustains an effective
personal liaison with all members of the Nevada
congressional delegation, the governor's office, and key members of the Nevada legislature.
During biannual sessions of the Nevada
legislature the Alliance
carefully monitors the session.
Most important to an Alliance
member is the ongoing opportunity to access fellow members. The twenty-four
corporate members, including major defense, energy and technology firms
together with local companies, are a catalyst for economic development and
diversification in Nevada.
In addition, associate members of the Alliance
are important individuals representing professional business interests, local
governments and university elements. The board of directors meets monthly and
general membership meetings are conducted quarterly.
The value of the unique access afforded Nevada Alliance members far
outweighs the reasonable annual fees for membership.
